After three decades of one-party rule and serious violations of human rights, there is now an open and lively multi-party system with general elections scheduled for 7 May 1994. This new report contains an assessment of the current human rights situation in Malawi. It welcomes developments such as the release of all remaining political prisoners, the accession to international human rights treaties and several important constitutional and legislative changes affecting human rights. It includes the findings of a visit by AI representatives in November 1993, the organization’s first permitted visit concerning human rights in over 20 years. The report also presents further proposals on ways to protect human rights, updating recommendations made in a previous report issued in September 1993 (AFR 36/31/93).
