Trade Unionists’ Action 1992

Eight appeal cases are presented here, documenting repression of people engaged in peaceful trade union activities. They are: Ali al-Mahi al-Sakhi, president of the banned Sudan Mint Workers Union, and Muawia Umran: detained incommunicado; Colombian teacher Juan Alberto Garay: found dead on 24 October 1991; the “disappearance” of Marcela Valdez de la Cruz, a Peruvian teacher and member of SUTEP; Zhang Qiwang, a Chinese trade unionist: jailed for three years; Edilberto Benson, his pregnant wife and their daughter: shot dead in the Philippines last August; S B S D Pathirana, a member of the JHWU in Sri Lanka: “disappeared”; Amneh ‘Abd al- Jabbar Rimawi, Deputy Chair of the GFTU (West Bank): reportedly ill- treated; Moroccan trade unionist Houcine el Manouzi: “disappeared” in 1972.
