Testimonies from Judges and Prosecutors on the Death Penalty: Amnesty International Panel Discussion: United Nations – 21 October 2008

On 21 October 2008, four judges and prosecutors from Japan, Jordan, Nigeria and the USA, who have participated in death penalty cases, gave their personal accounts at the United Nations on what made them oppose the death penalty. These testimonies demonstrate once more how unreliable the evidence can be on which death row inmates are convicted. They underlined that often the sole evidence in death penalty cases is the ‘confession’ of the accused, apparently frequently extracted through coercion, ill-treatment or torture.
