Bahrain: Violations of human rights
Amnesty International's concerns about violations of human rights in Bahrain are reported in this document. Hundreds of alleged government opponents have been detained arbitrarily, sometimes incommunicado, for up to seven years without trial. Most were allegedly connected to Islamic groups. Many have been sentenced to long prison terms after unfair trials. AI believes that they include prisoners of conscience. Some communities appear to be particularly vulnerable to arbitrary arrest, for example, Shi'a communities in areas such as Bani Jamra, al-Bilad al-Qadim, Sanabis and al-Diraz as well as certain districts of Manama. Shi'a clerics and religious scholars have been arrested and detained. Reports of torture of political prisoners are included and conditions in prisons described.
