Sierra Leone: The extrajudicial execution of suspected rebels and collaborators
This paper reports AI's concerns about allegations of violations by government forces engaged in repulsing an invasion force which entered Sierra Leone in March 1991. Suspected rebels and collaborators are believed to have been summarily executed after perfunctory investigation; some of those executed are reported to have been civilians. Torture and ill- treatment of rebel suspects has also been reported. Up to 130 rebel suspects and collaborators have been held in unofficial administrative detention in Freetown since April 1991; AI is concerned about reportedly harsh prison conditions and about the apparent lack of legal basis for their detention. Several individual cases are discussed. Killings and violations by rebels and NFPL invading forces are also reported.
