Nigeria: Oil spill investigations in the Niger Delta: Amnesty International memorandum

Oil spills are a serious problem in the Niger Delta. Oil companies frequently assert that most oil spilt is due to sabotage, a claim based on oil spill investigations. The investigation process has been the subject of community complaints over many years, with allegations that the process lacks transparency, does not always comply with national law and standards, and the data recorded on oil spill investigation forms are inaccurate. This memorandum provides a summary of the inadequacies of the current oil spill investigation process.
