African Union: A new opportunity for the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa

At the forthcoming summit in South Africa, in July 2002, the Constitutive Act of the African Union will become fully operational completing the transition from the Organization of African Unity to the African Union. This report looks at the political and other organs created by the Constitutive Act in terms of their potential to reinforce the promotion and protection of human rights in the continent.
