Turkmenistan: Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review: Third session of the UPR Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council, December 2008

In this submission, Amnesty International provides information under sections B, C and D, as stipulated in the General Guidelines for the Preparation of Information under the Universal Periodic Review. Amnesty International raises concern over the definition of “high treason” and the propiska system. The organisation also highlights concerns in relation to the clampdown on civil society activists and independent journalists; enforced disappearances following unfair trial; restrictions on religious freedom; conscientious objectors; and discrimination against ethnic minorities. Amnesty International makes a number of recommendations for action by the government.
