Trinidad and Tobago: Human rights concerns in Trinidad and Tobago: Amnesty International Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, October 2011

In this submission, Amnesty International raises concerns about the death penalty and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. In addition, Trinidad and Tobago has failed to ratify several international human rights treaties. Excessive use of force by the police is widespread as is gender-based discrimination and violence against women and girls. In relation to the administration of justice, shortages of judges and lawyers translate into heavy backlogs in the courts and lengthy pre-trial detentions.
