Brazil’s sustained economic growth over the past decade has transformed the country into a major world economy. However, more than 30 per cent of Indigenous people live in extreme poverty – more than double the percentage in the general population. As Brazil’s profile on the world stage rises, the federal government must take the commitments it has made on human rights seriously. Most importantly, it must resolve all outstanding land claims and ensure that free, prior and informed consent is sought and gained for any decision affecting traditional Indigenous lands.
