Further information on UA 463/90 (MDE 11/03/90, 15 November 1990) - Legal Concern
BAHRAIN : Ahmad al-Maqabi
The three people named above were arrested in June 1989 and held in incommunicado detention for several months, during which they were allegedly subjected to torture to make them confess to membership of an unauthorized organization. They were brought to trial and on 7 November acquitted of all charges. However they remained in detention.
Amnesty International has just been informed that Hussein al-Tattan and Hadi al-Musawi were released on 15 November. However Ahmad al-Maqabi remains in custody.
No further action is therefore required for Hussein al-Tattan and Hadi al-Musawi, however please continue appeals for Ahmad al-Maqabi.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Telexes/telegrams/airmail letters:
- expressing concern about the continuing detention of Ahmad al-Maqabi after his reported acquittal;
- urging that, if he is being held solely for the non-violent expression of his conscientiously held beliefs, he should be released immediately and unconditionally;
- seeking information about his present legal status, and assurances that he has access to lawyers and members of his family.
