Amnesty International to launch Trapped: The Exploitation of Migrant Workers in Malaysia
EMBARGO 04:00 HRS GMT 24 MARCH 2010
A new report from Amnesty International exposes widespread abuses against migrant workers who are lured to Malaysia by the promise of jobs but are instead used in forced labour or exploited in other ways.
Amnesty’s report documents how migrants, many from Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Nepal, are forced to work in hazardous situations, often against their will, and toil for 12 hours a day or more. Many are subject to verbal, physical and sexual abuse.
The report launches at a press conference in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia on 24 March and features numerous case studies.
