Guantanamo - Amnesty International global protests mark 5 year anniversary



PHOTO AND FILMING OPPORTUNITIES

Marking five years since the first transfer of prisoners to Guantanamo Bay, Amnesty International is planning a series of events across the world to demand the immediate closure of the detention centre. These include:


In the USA... In Washington DC at 10:30 (local time) a press conference will be followed by a rally, co-hosted by the Center for Constitutional Rights, on the steps of the U.S Supreme Court

In New York City, vigil and prayers to close Guantanamo

In the UK...Guantanamo Bay camp will be recreated outside the US embassy in London. Hundreds of people in orange boiler suits will be kneeling in the "stress" position, patrolled by uniform-clad "US guards" with large dogs on leashes.

In Spain...The US embassy in Madrid will be presented with an instruction sheet on 'How to Close Guantanamo', together with 120,000 signatures of people calling for Guantanamo's closure.

In Italy...caged campaigners in orange overalls will protest in Rome's central square, together with activists dressed as guards. Italian celebrities will read out testimonies written by Guantanamo detainees.

In Israel... a demonstration will be held, collecting messages of protest to be sent to the US Ambassador in Israel

In Japan...former Guantanamo detainees Ruhel Ahmed and Shafiq Rasul, part of the 'Tipton Three', will attend a screening of The Road to Guantanamo and take part in a panel discussion.
