HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS GIVEN PROTECTION
Peruvian human rights defenders Rosario Huayanca Zapata and Father José Manuel Miranda Azpiroz are now receiving protection from the police. This follows a series of death threats against them. The action taken as a result of the Urgent Action issued on their behalf may have contributed to this positive development.
Rosario Huayanca Zapata and Father José Manuel Miranda Azpiroz of the Human Rights Committee (Comité de Derechos Humanos, CODEH) in the Ica region of Peru, who received death threats on 4 and 8 October, have reported that there have been no further security incidents or threats against them since October.
Rosario Huayanca Zapata now receives 24-hour police protection, after police first refused to do so. The level of protection has been agreed with her. Other members of the Human Rights Committee, including Father José Manuel Miranda, have also agreed some protection measures with the police.
No further action is requested at this time from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
