Further Information on UA 197/08 (AMR 20/002/2008, 11 July 2008) Prisoner of Conscience

CANADA James Corey Glass (m), conscientious objector

James Corey Glass has been allowed to stay in Canada until the country's Federal Court hears his appeal against the order to deport him.

Corey Glass arrived in Canada in August 2006. He applied to be treated as a refugee but his application was rejected. He then submitted a petition, to be allowed to remain in Canada on “humanitarian and compassionate” reasons. This petition was also rejected. He subsequently appealed to the Federal Court to review his case. In May, before the Federal Court had considered his appeal, he was issued with a deportation order.

Corey Glass is the first conscientious objector from the US to face deportation from Canada. Amnesty International is concerned that he risks being court-martialled and jailed for between one and five years if returned to the USA.

No further action by the UA Network is requested at present. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
