Dr Nour al-Din al-Atassi, former President of Syria, and Muhammad Rabah al- Tawil, former Minister of the Interior, have recently been released. Both had been detained without trial since 1970. Fourteen other former government officials arrested after the 1970 coup remain in detention in Damascus.
