Singapore: Failing to respect civil rights

This submission, prepared for the UN Universal Periodic Review of Singapore in May 2011, details Amnesty International’s concerns about the death penalty, arbitrary detention and unfair trials, restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly, under the Public Order Act. Caning continues to be used as a punishment and the government is still failing to provide basic protection for migrant workers, despite recently introduced measures to improve the situation for migrants.
