Amnesty International’s concerns in South Korea include: the detention of people under National Security legislation for the peaceful exercise of their rights to freedom of expression; the continued detention of some 40 “unconverted” political prisoners, apparently as a result of their refusal to renounce their alleged communist views and the imprisonment of others after trials which may not have been fair; reports of beating and deprivation of sleep of prisoners during interrogation; and the continued use of the death penalty.
