This report describes cases of people who are currently detained or imprisoned throughout China for attempting to defend workers’ rights or set up independent trade unions. It is being published in conjunction with another AI report entitled “People’s Republic of China: Labour unrest and the suppression of the rights to freedom of association and expression” (ASA 17/015/2002). The cases described include labour activists, people such as lawyers who have been detained for attempting to defend activists and workers, as well as transport, paper, printing and other workers.
