In this submission, Amnesty International raises concern over provisions in the Australian Constitution which do not protect adequately against racial discrimination; the lack of sufficient human rights protection in both the Constitution and domestic law; and Australia’s lagging behind on its commitments to the Millennium Development Goals. The organization also highlights concerns about violations of the human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; offshore processing of asylum-seekers who arrive by boat; counter-terrorism laws which violate Australia’s international law obligations, violations of women’s human rights and discrimination against LGBT persons.
