Rural leader Antônio Isídio Pereira da Silva and families from the community of Vergel, in the interior of the north-eastern Brazilian state of Maranhão, have received a series of death threats. Vergel has long been targeted by loggers and land-grabbers who have repeatedly used violence to intimidate them.
