Togo: A high risk transition

In this document, Amnesty International appeals to the Togolese government to avoid excessive use of force and to immediately end atrocities committed by the security forces, particularly extrajudicial executions and indiscriminate violence against the civilian population. Following the death of the President In February 2005, all political parties seemed to accept the proposal put forward by ECOWAS, that presidential elections should be held within two months. However Amnesty International fears a new spiral of violence in this high risk transition period.
