Ethiopia: Arbitrary Detention/Torture or other ill-treatment: Birtukan Mideksa (f)

Opposition party leader Birtukan Mideksa was arrested on 28 December 2008 and is being held in Kaliti Prison without charge, in solitary confinement. She has been on a hunger strike. Her immediate family have been allowed to visit her but she has had no access to legal representation or medical treatment. Due to her isolation, she is considered at risk of torture and other ill-treatment. Amnesty International considers her a prisoner of conscience, arrested solely for the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of expression and association.
