Africa: Oral Statement to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

In this statement, Amnesty International highlights specific violations of human rights in Somalia, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Sudan. The organization raises concerns about many abuses including armed conflict, violations against civilians, displaced people, child soldiers, lack of accountability, racially-motivated, sexual and political violence as well as harassment of journalists and the media. In addition, Amnesty International welcomes the inauguration of a special court to bring to justice former Chadian president Hissène Habré to justice and stresses the importance of the African Commission being involved in this process.
