Sudan: A continuing human rights crisis
Whilst welcoming the release of prisoners of conscience in 1991, AI still has serious concerns about the violations of human rights in Sudan. This document reports abuses including the long-term detention of political prisoners, some of whom are untried, others imprisoned after unfair trials. New arrests in Central Sudan are reported, including those of former prisoners, of students involved in demonstrations, of alleged conspirators in a coup in August 1991 and others. AI is concerned about alleged torture of detainees, often during short-term incommunicado detention in so-called "ghost houses". "Disappearances" and summary killings have been reported from the war zones of the Nuba mountains and Darfur. Abuses by the armed opposition, the SPLA, are also reported.
