Amnesty International/Reprieve conference: Maher Arar and Extraordinary Renditions

This document reports on two cases where Canadian citizens were detained by US officials and sent to Syria where they were detained and tortured before their release. This presentation was made by Maria LaHood, Center for Constitutional Rights, at the Amnesty International/Reprieve Conference: The Global Struggle Against Torture: Guantánamo Bay, Bagram and beyond, 19-21 November 2005. In exposing the truth about renditions, transfers of detainees from country to country without legal process, the organizations hope to erode the notion that human rights are secondary to “national” security.
