Algeria: Key human rights concerns ahead of presidential elections : Media briefing

The Algerian authorities should stop avoiding scrutiny of their human rights record, Amnesty International said today, as the country prepares for presidential elections. The limits of the government’s tolerance of free expression, as well as its failure to abide by human rights obligations, have been laid bare by a recent crackdown on peaceful protesters. The authorities have also severely curtailed personal freedoms, such as the right to choose one’s religion. Dozens of people are sentenced to death every year, thus undermining the right to life.
