This report addresses Amnesty International's concerns at the apparent increase in politically motivated arbitrary arrests in Syria which began towards the end of 2000. Those arrested include members of parliament, prominent opposition figures, and other activists in civil society groups and the emerging human rights movement. The report raises the cases of 12 prisoners of conscience who are currently held in Syrian prisons.
