Appointing a highly qualified and independent freedom of opinion and expression mandate holder: Article 19, Amnesty International and others’ joint oral statement to the 25th Session of the UN Human Rights Council

The Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression has since 1993 played a crucial role in informing the Human Rights Commission and subsequently the Council about the challenges and violations that people exercising these rights face on the ground. A new mandate holder is to be appointed in June and Amnesty International and others have submitted criteria to ensure that candidates are independent and possess the necessary expertise to carry the mandate forwards.
