On 10 December 1998 Mukhametkuli Aymuradov and Khoshali Garayev were sentenced to an extra 18 years’ imprisonment for an alleged escape attempt. It is believed that the “attempt” was orchestrated by the authorities as a way of maintaining the men under maximum security conditions.
