This is an update of a report published by Amnesty International in May 2002 concerning deaths in custody in suspicious circumstances in Romania (AI Index: EUR 39/002/2002). The organization is concerned about the government’s failure to implement Amnesty International’s recommendations and to ensure the protection of the internationally recognized fundamental right to life and freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment.
