On 22 November 1993, conscientious objector Nikos Alekou Paisis was sentenced by Nicosia Military Court to eight months' imprisonment for refusing to perform compulsory military service. This is his first term of imprisonment. When he is released he will probably be called up again, and is likely to face a further term of imprisonment. As a Jehovah's Witness he is opposed to performing any kind of military service. He is a prisoner of conscience.
