Bulgaria: Torture and ill-treatment of Roma in Glushnik

AI is concerned about allegations of apparently illegal detention, beatings and other ill-treatment of 20 Roma (Gypsies) by a police officer and villagers in Glushnik on 3 and 4 November 1993. About 40 Roma had apparently been gathering grapes illegally from the village vineyards. Two of the Roma beaten were reportedly children and Roma women were allegedly threatened with rape. AI believes that this attack may have been motivated by the victims’ ethnic origin.
