The appointment of General Suchinda Khraprayun as Prime Minister on 7 April 1992 was followed by mass protests, culminating in a violent crackdown on protestors by security forces in Bangkok from 17-20 May. Official statements report that 52 people were killed, 696 injured and 175 are still missing. Unofficial estimates of the numbers of dead, injured and missing persons are considerably higher. One doctor attending to the wounded reported that some of those killed appear to have been shot in the back. An AI delegation met government officials in June 1992 and raised its concern about the lack of judicial power of official committees investigating these events and about the possible impunity granted to those responsible for the killings.
