Mohamed Shaheeb, a journalist writing for the newspaper Haveeru, was arrested on 20 January 1997, reportedly in connection with a fictional short story he had written about the treatment of a young woman detained by police. He is currently being held in Dhoonidhoo detention centre. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience and is concerned for his safety while in police custody.
