Lao People’s Democratic Republic: Prisoners of conscience left to die

Thongsouk Saysangkhi, prisoner of conscience, died in prison in February 1998. He was arrested in 1990 with Latsami Khamphoui and Feng Sakchittaphong following their peaceful calls for political and economic change. Amnesty International was alerted to the poor conditions of their prison and their deteriorating state of health but on application to the Lao authorities were told that all three were well. Thongsouk Saysangkhi’s death occured two months after AI had once again alerted the authorities to his condition.
