Republic of Korea (South Korea): Amnesty International’s comments on the National Human Rights Commission Act: Towards an autonomous, effective National Human Rights Commission

The National Human Rights Commission Act was passed by the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (South Korea hereafter) in May 2001. In accordance with the National Human Rights Commission Act, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on 25 November 2001. While welcoming the passage of the National Human Rights Commission Act and the establishment of the NHRC, Amnesty International expresses its concerns on the selection process of the Commissioners, vaguely worded provisions in the National Human Rights Commission Act and on potential limitations in the investigative powers of the NHRC.
