In this open letter Amnesty international urges the Indonesian authorities to give the upmost priority to the review and passing of a new Criminal Code respectful of the National Constitution and the Law on Human Rights. The organization calls for the criminalization of torture, for the repeal of provisions criminalizing freedom of expression and for the repeal of the death penalty, for example. The new Code should also ensure the incorporation of implementing legislation related to the international human rights treaties Indonesia has ratified in recent years.
