India: Accountability, impunity and obstacles to access to justice: Amnesty International Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, May-June 2012

In this submission Amnesty International comments on the government’s implementation of recommendations made to India during its first UPR in 2008. Amnesty International notes that India retains laws which are not in line with the fundamental rights enshrined in its Constitution and its obligations under international treaties. India’s national and state-level human rights commissions continue to operate with restricted mandates and limited powers. Ongoing and proposed corporate-led extractive projects in several states have met with protests from Adivasis and other marginalized communities.
