The remarks in this document were given by Amnesty International's Myanmar Researcher at the Royal Institute of International Affairs on 11 May 2010. Later this year Myanmar will hold its first national elections since 1990, when the NLD party won a resounding victory, but was denied the opportunity to take office. This year’s elections thus present an opportunity for the government to place 1990 firmly behind them, pursuant to its self-styled ‘Roadmap to Democracy’. Three areas of concern are considered: ethnic minority political opponents; electoral laws and, finally, a Commission of Inquiry.
