Bangladesh: Human rights violations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts: an update

This report updates “Bangladesh: Human rights in the Chittagong Hill Tracts 1989-1990 (ASA 13/04/91). It covers violations reported both under the interim government and that of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, e.g. unacknowledged detention, detention without trial, torture and death of tribal detainees. These abuses occur in the context of violence perpetrated by the armed opposition group Shanti Bahini. Cases reported include the detention without trial of Bijoy Ketan Chakma, the unacknowleged detention of Monotosh Dewan, Kinaram Chakma, Anil Bikash Chakma, Shantima Chakma and Dharma Mani Chakma and the deaths of Kashiram Chakma and Tusher Kanti Chakma. S.M. Shaheedullah and Rashidur Rahman were detained for reprinting a human rights report on the area.
