United States of America: Submission to the United Nations Committee Against Torture: 53rd session of the Committee (3-28 November 2014)

Amnesty International’s focus in this submission on the issue of accountability for the USA’s human rights violations in the context of counter-terrorism, particularly in relation to the CIA programme of secret detention, should not be taken as an indication that all is well elsewhere in the USA’s record under UNCAT. There are many issues of concern, including maximum security prison units, electro-shock weapons, death penalty, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole of juveniles, indefinite detention without charge or criminal trial at Guantánamo, and resort to military commission trials there.
