On the evening of 18 March 2009, the Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, signed into law a bill abolishing the death penalty in his state. New Mexico becomes the 15th abolitionist state in the USA. Amnesty International applauds New Mexico’s decision to end its use of the death penalty, and urges government officials and legislators in other jurisdictions in the USA to reflect upon and follow New Mexico’s example.
