Guatemala: Lack of investigations into past human rights abuses: clandestine cemeteries

This document describes Amnesty International’s (AI) concern at the apparent failure of the Guatemalan authorities to examine sites where opponents of the military government are alleged to have been buried in secret in the early 1980s. The only exhumations which have taken place have occurred as a result of repeated pressure on the authorities and those requesting such exhumations have frequently faced harassment and threats. Ten case studies of such secret burial sites are included here: they are the sites at Chilil, Chijtinimit, San Pedro Jocopilas, Pacoc, Pachoj, Tunaja, Santa Rosa Chujuyub, San Miguel Uspantan, Chixoy and Tierra Blanca. The appendices include a list of 18 names of people identified after their remains had been exhumed in 1989/1990.
