In this submission Amnesty International expresses disappointment that there were no recommendations related to Indigenous Peoples’ rights, human rights defenders, or the harassment of protesters during the previous UPR of Ecuador in 2008. Amnesty International is also concerned that in recent years spurious criminal charges have been brought against human rights defenders, including Indigenous leaders, in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to curb their rights to freedom of expression, assembly and association.
