Democratic Republic of Congo: “Better to die while speaking the truth…” : Attacks against human rights defenders in North Kivu, DRC

For over two decades, the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been marred by successive waves of instability and protracted armed conflict. Various armed groups, foreign armies, and the Congolese national army FARDC (Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo) have vied for political and military control of land and resources. This report highlights the impact of the ongoing armed conflict on human rights defenders in North Kivu. Amnesty International has documented numerous cases of intimidation, death threats, arbitrary detentions, ill-treatment, and unlawful killings of human rights defenders.
