This document, published by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, urges that action be taken to protect the women of Darfur and Chad. It is impossible to know how many women have been raped since the armed conflict began in Darfur in 2003. Rape and other forms of sexual violence by fighters are recognized as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The large-scale and often systematic rape of women is the most flagrant example of the violence suffered by women in Darfur.
