South Africa (Bophuthatswana): The case of Patrick Huma

Patrick Huma, a human rights lawyer in the nominally independent homeland of Bophuthatswana, has been subjected to arbitrary detention, torture, and assassination attempts during 1992. Police arrested him early on 29 January 1992. They allegedly ill-treated him while searching his room, removing money and his academic gown as evidence of stolen goods. He was taken to Ga-Rankuwa police station where the ill-treatment and assault continued; he was also allegedly tortured with electricity. On 30 January he was treated in hospital for a broken arm; afterwards he was returned to custody where he was subjected to more torture. He was eventually released on bail on 7 February. Attempts to kill him have been made in May, August and October of this year.
