South Africa: State of fear: appeals on behalf of victims of torture and political killings

This document features cases of victims selected from the report “South Africa: State of fear” (AFR 53/09/92) published in June 1992. Cases featured include: the assassination of ANC member Tsepo Lengwati and attacks on others connected to the ANC, namely Siza Rani and Jerry Maine; alleged security force collusion with Inkatha in the attack on Swanieville squatter camp in May 1991; political killings of Emmanuel Bhengu and Thulebona Majola in KwaMakhutha township, Durban attacks on Khayelitsha township in the context of the Cape Town “Taxi War”, including the killing of Solomon Tshuku and torture of Zwelitsha Mhluthwa; torture and killings in Western Transvaal, including the deaths of Mbuyiselo Phiri and Willam Makage, both aged 16; and alleged abuses in Bophuthatswana.
