Thirty to forty percent of all fighting forces during Liberia’s 14 years of conflict were women and girls. Despite UN and government intentions for a gender-based approach to Disarmament, Demobilization Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DDRR), there was not enough high level political support to make sure that DDRR staff followed the UN’s Standards. Barriers such as fear of stigmatization need to be considered today as the country moves beyond the DDRR process and into community based reintegration programs that address all the needs in the community.
